Comes with suitcase and instructions.  Some disassembly and assembly is required but you only need rudimentary mechanical skills (if you can change a flat tire and unscrew a bolt, you can handle this).

The Grasshopper fx is our most popular 2-wheeled recumbent bike and for good reason: it folds quickly; it is relatively lightweight; the ride quality and engineering are superb; and it looks great.

Many of our customers want to travel with their Grasshopper fx recumbent bikes, whether by plane, train or automobile. To meet that demand, we have created a special edition “Air” version of the Grasshopper fx that is lighter than the standard version and fits into a suitcase.

At baggage claim: New York City Recumbent Supply’s Grasshopper fx “Air” recumbent bike (manufactured by HP Velotechnik).

For many years, there have been “travel” versions of recumbent bikes. But (nearly) all of them have had critical flaws: poor quality, too costly, too complicated to pack, poor manufacturer support, or the ride quality was so bad that no one wanted to use them after they got to their destination.

At New York City Recumbent Supply, we took this challenge head-on and created a version of the HP Velotechnik Grasshopper fx that can be packed into a suitcase for air travel.

  • Like all HP Velotechnik recumbent bikes, the Grasshopper fx “Air” meets the highest standards and is built to last, with a 10-year warranty for the bike frame.
  • The price is in-line with those for the standard Grasshopper fx and many of the same options and accessories are available.
  • Unlike hard-to-pack models from other manufacturers, the Grasshopper fx “Air” packs easily and quickly — figure about 20 minutes. (After one “practice run,” Robert (me) could pack it in about 15 minutes and re-assemble it in about 25 minutes.)
  • As with all HP Velotechnik machines, you can count on HP Velotechnik for world-class manufacturer support.Grasshopper fx/Air packed and ready to close the lid.Packed and ready to close the lid. The only tools you need are probably in your basic bicycle tool kit: hex wrenches and a small adjustable wrench.
  • Riders all over the world recognize the HP Velotechnik brand as being synonymous with some of the best recumbent bikes in existence with a ride quality that is positively unparalleled.
  • The Grasshopper fx “Air” fits in the trunk of an economy rental car with the back seats up!
  • Fits on Amtrak, the New York City Subway, Metro North, NJ Transit and many other regional trains and buses.

Standing head and shoulders above the others, the HP Velotechnik Grasshopper fx is possibly the world’s finest folding recumbent bike. Built for touring and fast commuting, HPV’s brilliant engineering and consistent attention to detail result in a high quality recumbent that does everything an urban recumbent rider could want. Two 20″ wheels, so it’s small and spry, but designed for stability. The bottom bracket is 5″ above the seat level, so it’s aerodynamic and fast. The chain ring is protected and the chain is covered by chain tubes, so you won’t get grease on yourself or other passengers on the train. To pack it in the suitcase for the plane, it takes about 20 minutes to take it apart once you’ve practiced a bit. For the train, it folds in about 60 seconds. Made in Germany.

The Grasshopper fx is popular with New Yorkers because it’s easy to take on trains or buses (in the optional carrying bag). Folding bikes don’t need a permit. More detailed reviews of the “GHfx” can be found here (on this website) and here, on my blog.

The Grasshopper fx recumbent bike was honored with the Eurobike Award 2007 for innovative design and excellent product quality.
